AGENDA &
TOPICS
|
- INFORMAL DISCUSSION - For
the first 30 minutes of the Thursday night forums we will have informal discussion.
This will allow for late arrivals, food & drink ordering, and new attendees
to become acclimated.
- ANNOUNCEMENTS - Any
events, news, or other items that you feel are of interest to the group can be
announced at the start of Free Inquiry Forum.
TOPICS for Thursday
(5/13/04):
- Discuss the latest news on the Iraq
prisoner abuse and the video
of an American being beheaded in Iraq? There are hundreds more photographs
of Iraq prisoner abuse that the Pentagon says that it has - should those be released
publicly? What more might they show beyond what has already shocked so much of
the world? The beheading of an American civilian in Iraq was said to have been
carried out to avenge abuses of Iraqi prisoners. Are we entering into a vicious
cycle of violence and revenge? How can it be stopped? Should the U.S. pull out
of Iraq all together? Should more troops be sent? Should the draft
be reinstated?
- The
city council of Zephyrhills, FL had changed a street name to Martin Luther King
Avenue to honor the civil rights activist. But then dozens of people protested.
The council has now voted to change the street back to its original name, but
to keep up both street signs. Do you agree with the city council's decision? How
would you react if they renamed the street you lived on to MLK?
- Mexican
Air Force pilots filmed 11 unidentified flying objects in the skies over southern
Campeche state. What do you think these objects may have been? Do you think
UFOs could be alien spacecrafts
or do you feel there is a more natural explanation.
- Florida
elections officials have ordered a statewide purge of freed felons from its voter
roles, an election-year directive that some say would disenfranchise up to
40,000 people. Florida is the largest of seven states that does not automatically
restore voting rights of convicted criminals once they leave prison. Do you think
felons should be taken off Florida's voter rolls?.
- What do you think of Kerry's
and/or Bush's
latest political ads?
Quote of the week: "UFOlogy
is the mythology of the space age. Rather than angels...we now have...extraterrestrials.
It is the product of the creative imagination. It serves a poetic and existential
function. It seeks to give man deeper roots and bearings in the universe. It is
an expression of our hunger for mystery...our hope for transcendental meaning.
The gods of Mt. Olympus have been transformed into space voyagers, transporting
us by our dreams to other realms." [Paul Kurtz]
