Free Inquiry Forum - A weekly forum for those who enjoy a casual social gathering involving eating, drinking, and engaging discourse. Discuss, debate or just listen as we take a critical look at current events and subjects involving: Religion, Philosophy, History, Politics, Science and more.
"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
AGENDA & TOPICS
  • INFORMAL DISCUSSION - For the first 30 minutes of the Thursday night forums we will have informal discussion. This will allow for late arrivals, food & drink ordering, and new attendees to become acclimated.
  • ANNOUNCEMENTS - Any events, news, or other items that you feel are of interest to the group can be announced at the start of Free Inquiry Forum.

TOPICS for Thursday (4/15/04) and Monday (4/19/04):

  1. Discuss President Bush's news conference on Tuesday. How do you think he did?
  2. Will engineered pathogens become the main weapon used by terrorists in the future? If so, how can we defend ourselves against these self-replicating weapons of mass destruction? Can terrorism, using these type of weapons, be supressed or prevented?
  3. Canada's best-known religion writer concludes Jesus never existed and that most of the Christ story was borrowed from older religions. Do you think Jesus existed? Should someone still label themselves a Christian if they believe that the Jesus story is a myth? What would be left of Christianity if it loses the figure of Jesus Christ?
  4. A recent study, published in the April issue of Pediatrics, added attention deficit disorder to the list of harmful effects of excessive television viewing that also includes obesity and violent behavior. Do you agree with the results of this study? What can be done?
  5. Discuss the recent testimonies in front of the 9/11 Commission.

Quote of the week: "The rise of fundamentalism is because we live in scary times. The appeal of the absolute is very great. The idea that we are the winning side. The kind of language Bush is using to justify killing Iraqis." [Tom Harpur, author of The Pagan Christ - Source]
