Free Inquiry Forum - A weekly forum for those who enjoy a casual social gathering involving eating, drinking, and engaging discourse. Discuss, debate or just listen as we take a critical look at current events and subjects involving: Religion, Philosophy, History, Politics, Science and more.
"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
SCHEDULE

12/11/03 - Suggested topics:

  1. The United States is preparing to launch a massive biometric database to monitor the comings and goings of immigrants and visitors from abroad. Will it be effective? Does the plan lack adequate privacy safeguards?
  2. How will Al Gore's endorsement affect Howard Dean's campaign? How do you feel about the similarities between Dean and Bush? Will Nader run for president in 2004? Should Nader run?
  3. This past Friday, ABC's 20/20 investigated John Edward, the man who millions of Americans believe he can communicate with the dead. (Watch the video clip) Is what John Edward and the other TV Psychics do: a truly helpful showing of psychic power, harmless entertainment, or an immoral con game?
  4. Atheists can't hold office in seven states according to each state's constitution. Why does this discrimination exist and why is it still allowed? Are there other ways in which atheists are discriminated against?
  5. Should humans go back to the moon?
  6. What are your views on Christmas (and the other winter holidays)? Have they become too religious, too secular, too materialistic, too commercialized?

Quote of the week: "Most societies actually depend on widespread ignorance. If the populace were aware of its own manipulation, then there would also be widespread discontent. The Government and the Media are not in the business of distributing unfiltered information to society. They collectively take on the role of overprotective parents in the guise of their presumed responsibility to protect the public from themselves. However, once a government or press assumes this mission, there is no logical end to it. Potentially 'dangerous' ideas must not be allowed prolonged exposure. And if they do receive publicity, counter arguments must be 'marketed.'" [Source]
