Free Inquiry Forum - A weekly forum for those who enjoy a casual social gathering involving eating, drinking, and engaging discourse. Discuss, debate or just listen as we take a critical look at current events and subjects involving: Religion, Philosophy, History, Politics, Science and more.
"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
SCHEDULE

11/20/03 - Suggested topics:

  1. Why does the USA need an income tax? Why should people have to give up a large percentage of their income to taxes? Would a voluntary “consumption" tax on goods and services, such as the proposed FairTax be a better alternative? Would this alternative be fair? Are there other viable alternatives?
  2. What are your views on the nature of consciousness?
  3. What part of the media is more to blame for the increase in paranormal and supernatural beliefs? Films, TV Talk Shows, TV "Documentaries", books, or something else? Will this trend continue to increase? What, if anything, can be done to reverse this trend?
  4. Will this recently opened adults-only science center succeed in Britain? Would something like this Dana Center be able to succeed in the USA?
  5. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that the state of Massachusetts may not "deny the protections, benefits and obligations conferred by civil marriage to two individuals of the same sex who wish to marry." Should the decision on same sex marriage be a federal or state matter? Will Bush succeed in banning gay marriage by amending the constitution? Will the gay marriage issue have a large impact on the presidential '04 race? If so, which party is more likely to get burned by this hot button social issue?
  6. Do repressed memories truly exist? If so, how and why are memories suppressed? Recent studies suggest that visual false memories can be induced more easily than once thought. With this type of data showing that our memories are quite malleable, should skepticism be used even more abundantly?
  7. Is Michael Jackson guilty of child molestation?

Quote of the week: "Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman. I will work with congressional leaders and others to do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage." [George W. Bush's reaction to the news that the Massachusetts Supreme court struck down the state's ban on same-sex unions. Source]
