Free Inquiry Forum - A weekly forum for those who enjoy a casual social gathering involving eating, drinking, and engaging discourse. Discuss, debate or just listen as we take a critical look at current events and subjects involving: Religion, Philosophy, History, Politics, Science and more.
"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
SCHEDULE

11/06/03 - Suggested topics:

  1. Who do you think came out ahead at the Rock the Vote debate between the Democratic presidential candidates? What did you think about the questions that were asked? Should Howard Dean have apologized for his comment that he wanted "to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pick-up trucks."?
  2. President Bush signed into law a bill that is the most far-reaching abortion restrictions in three decades -- the partial-birth abortion ban. Do you agree with this ban? Do you think this is the first step in a larger campaign to ban all abortions? Why do you feel that recent polls show that a majority are for the partial-birth abortion ban? Will this end up in front of the Supreme Court?
  3. CBS has canceled the airing of the controversial miniseries "The Reagans" and will instead shuttle the movie to Showtime. Was this a correct move by CBS? Does this infringe on free expression of opinion? Is there now an increasing chance that other interest groups will try to bury controversial subject matter?
  4. Does such a thing as an absolute moral exist? Is it even possible to have a absolute moral? Or are all morals simply relative to each person as he or she sees fit?
  5. On July 25th the FDA officially recognized the practice of giving supplemental injections of human growth hormone to healthy but short children who have normal levels hGh. Should this be allowed? Is this the start of an "Age of Enhancement"? Where should the line be drawn where human enhancement is concerned?
  6. The USPS has announced a change in labeling requirements for bulk mailings that requires bulk mailers to identify themselves on the outside of the envelope with a valid address. Some think that this marks the first step in the Postal Service's desire to create "intelligent mail." Do you feel this new requirement is a good one or does it infringe on free speech and anonymity rights? Should this requirement be extended to individuals' mail?
  7. Pompano Beach has banned prayers at public commission meetings that mention specific deities. Should Govt. meetings have prayers that are religion-neutral, religon-specific, denomination-specific, or no prayers at all?

Quote of the week: "Today we saw the real George Bush. If we could afford to, we would put that speech on television every day from now until the election. Any shred of doubt that this is the most anti-choice president this country has ever had has been convincingly erased.'' [Kate Michelman, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. (source)]
