Free Inquiry Forum - A weekly forum for those who enjoy a casual social gathering involving eating, drinking  and engaging discourse.

Come join us on the outside deck of Geckos every Thursday night at 7PM.

"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
SCHEDULE

8/28/03 - Suggested topics will include:

  • Discuss the California recall. Although the recall is legal, is it justified? Will a majority vote to recall Governor Gray Davis? If so, who will be voted in as the replacement? If you were a California resident, how would you vote and why?
  • What does the frequently stated phrase, "You have to believe in something", really mean? How true, if at all, is this phrase?
  • Should Judge Moore be allowed to keep the 2-ton monument of the Ten Commandments in the state judicial building? Does the Ten Commandments monument violate the constitution's ban on government promotion of religious doctrine? Or does the forced removal of the monument violate the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion? What significance do the ten commandments really have? Which version of the ten commandments is the "correct" one? Should Judge Moore, who has already been suspended, be allowed to stay a judge?
  • An autistic eight-year-old boy was killed during a prayer service that was meant to drive out the evil spirits supposedly causing his condition. Should something be done to try and prevent these dangerous and sometimes fatal "exorcisms"?
  • According to a Newsweek poll, nearly half of Americans wouldn't vote for Bush again. How accurate do you feel these poll results are? Will Bush's popularity continue to decline?
  • How possible is it that intelligence exists on other life-bearing planets?
  • Scientists have debunked astrology's central claim — that our human characteristics are molded by the influence of the sun, moon and planets at the time of our birth — in the most thorough scientific study ever conducted on the subject. But will this data sway the credophiles that believe in astrology?

Quote of the week: "My duty under the Constitution is to acknowledge the Judeo-Christian God, not the gods of other faiths. We are not a nation founded upon the Hindu god or Buddha. They do not acknowledge the God of the holy Bible on which this country was founded." [Alabama Judge Roy Moore, in defiance of court orders demanding that he remove a replica of the 10 Commandments from his courtroom and cease opening court with prayer]
