Come join us on the outside deck of Geckos every Thursday night at 7PM.

"Those who are led by reason are truly free."
SCHEDULE

7/31/03 - Suggested topics will include:

  • Why is infidelity so prevalent? Is infidelity on the rise due to "internet affairs" as this article suggests? Is cyber sex cheating? Why do celebrities cheat when they know they are taking such a risk and have so much to lose? A new study by sex researchers shows more wives cheat on their husbands without remorse. The study shows 60% of married women will cheat at least once, compared to nearly 30% about 10 years ago. A shocking 90% of women say they do not show any guilt after the affair. Do you agree with the results from this study? What is the cause of this trend?
  • President Bush said Wednesday he respects homosexuals but draws the line at gay weddings, and he disclosed that government lawyers are exploring measures to legally define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Should and will this become a constitutional amendment?
  • "Hunting for Bambi"; a Las Vegas-based business which purportedly offered "hunters" the opportunity, for $10,000, to stalk naked women and shoot them with paintball guns; is officially a hoax. But how did this story get reported by so many news agencies as truth when back on July 14th, Snopes.com reported that it was most likely a hoax and needed further research? Is this just another example of a lack of skepticism in the news media as well as the average person?
  • Is materialism; the theory that physical matter is the only reality and that everything, including thought, feeling, mind, and will, can be explained in terms of matter and physical phenomena; the most logical philosophy to hold? Is it synonymous with naturalism: a system of thought holding that all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes and laws?
  • Discuss these poll results:
    • 53% oppose allowing gays to marry legally. 38% support the idea.
    • 44% believe that God gave the land that is now Israel to the Jewish people.
    • 36% thinks that the modern state of Israel is a "fulfillment of the biblical prophesy about the second coming of Jesus.
    • 62% thinks Bush strikes the right balance in how much he mentions his religious faith.
    • 58% believe the president's reliance on religion in policymaking is appropriate.
    • 38% say they would not vote for a well-qualified Muslim for president.
    • 17% would not vote for a well-qualified evangelical Christian for president.
    • 52% say they would not vote for a well-qualified atheist for president.
