Our February Speaker: Richard Lobo, President & CEO for WEDU Tampa

Dick Lobo is going to make us smarter about the media! Dick will give us a fifteen minute summary of the pressures shaping the media, and then, Start Your Questions! Whatever his response, you can trust they are shaped by knowledge of the field.

Management? Dick Lobo has over 40 years in commercial television. He was named President and CEO of WEDU in June, 2002, and before that, he managed several NBC stations, including WNBC in New York. He also served as President of WTVJ in Miami, and for its coverage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, WTVJ won the four most prestigious American television journalism awards.

Reporting? He has interviewed Fidel Castro, Robert Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, Mickey Mantle, and Malcolm X, among others. As a news reporter for WSVN-TV (WCKT) in Miami his Latin American reporting helped the station earns a Peabody Award.

Public Service? He served as Director of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting in the U. S. Information Agency from 1994-1995, appointed by President Clinton. Dick is currently on the Board of the Florida Assoc. of Broadcasters, and on the Advisory Board of the Governor’s Florida Film & Entertainment Office.

Here are directions to our meeting, at Twin Lakes Park, a Sarasota County Parks Building, located on Clark Road, about one-half mile east of I-75

1. Take I-75 to Exit 205, which is Clark Road in Sarasota (Route 72).
2. Go East on Clark Road for one-half mile. You will see a four by five foot sign saying “Twin Lakes Park.”
3. At this sign, turn Right into the park, go about 400 or 500 feet and turn Right at a Stop sign. This brings you to the green and white building in which we meet.
